The star of Nathan For You, Nathan Fielder, is just as much a man and a myth as he is a legend. The real man, Nathan, actually did graduate from one of Canada's top business schools with really good grades, just like he says in the intro of his show.

He actually wants to use his knowledge, as he says, to help "struggling small-business owners make it in this competitive world," but he's not just using his business knowledge. He's also using his comedy chops to create a hilarious show that can make audiences laugh and cringe at the same time. Though not an easy show to pull off, Nathan does it, somehow.

10/10 Finding The Client

The clients are one of the best parts of Nathan For You. It's not easy to find somebody willing to put up with the shenanigans that Nathan gets up to on the show, but the team behind the scenes puts a lot of work into making it happen. Nathan Fielder tries to search out people specifically who aren't going to question him and are just open to trying new experiences. After all, if they're open to new things, they won't be disappointed by Nathan: he has plenty of new and creative ideas to offer.

9/10 Jury-Style Casting

Keeping the clients in the dark about the reality of Nathan For You is a key part of the show. If the owners of the businesses that Nathan is helping knew that he was filming a funny show for Comedy Central, they might either choose not to play along or just act so fake that the show wouldn't be funny anymore. Nathan and the team specifically try to find clients who have never heard of him or his show before, and that hopefully have no idea that shows like this even exist. Impractical Jokers fans, of course, need not apply.

8/10 Awkward Silences

Nathan uses the personality he puts on as Nathan For You's Nathan Fielder (as opposed to the real Nathan Fielder) to manipulate people into doing what he wants in small, subtle ways. Completely putting his real self aside and creating a character from himself gives Nathan the opportunity to make people feel uncomfortable and awkward without necessarily feeling that way himself.

He even says that he uses a lot of awkward silences in order to make the other person fill them, seeing what new and exciting things they might come up with just to make him respond or please him with what they have to say (rather than blankly staring in silence, like Nathan so often does).

7/10 Recognition

The second everybody on the street starts recognizing Nathan, the show is going to have a big problem. Luckily, though, as is the case with similar shows like Billy on the Street or Impractical Jokers, there are so many people in this world that it's difficult to hit that point. Especially in the busy cities these performers choose, like Los Angeles or New York, it's particularly easy to get away with shenanigans like Nathan's, because there's always plenty of people who have no idea who he is and have no interest in finding out.

6/10 Outlining The Plans

One of the questions people most often ask about Nathan For You is, "Is the show scripted?" and, thank God, the answer is, mostly, no. After the casting process is completed– but before Nathan first goes to the client's place of business for their initial consultation– the show's team of writers actually come up with an outline for Nathan to follow once he's in. Though he has a rough plan in his outlined script, he constantly has to improvise due to the chaotic nature of the show and the completely unpredictable ways of humans. Audiences are lucky they make the show this way, because if everything wasn't as authentic as possible, Nathan for You likely wouldn't be half as amusing.

5/10 Keep A Straight Face

Nathan Fielder in Nathan for You

It's of vital importance that the cast and crew of Nathan For You keep a straight face during the filming of the show. The clients aren't aware that they're filming a comedy show, and they especially don't know they're going to end up on Comedy Central, of all networks.

That information only comes to them much later. If the cast or crew laughs during the filming of the show, of course the clients might start to catch on that something's up, and then the show's going to inevitably fall apart.

4/10 Flexibility Is Key

It's important not to get too attached to any particular ideas, in life or in Nathan For You. Remaining flexible is incredibly important, as a lot of improvisation is necessary to create the final product episodes that the audiences get to see. If Nathan, his cast, and his crew aren't flexible and willing to go with the flow when strange situations arise, some of the best episodes would never have happened. Fan-favorite episodes like the episode with the ghost realtor or Finding Franceswouldn't exist if Nathan hadn't followed his client's lead fully.

3/10 Stranger Than Fiction

That being said, people really do say the darndest things, and this is especially true when they don't actually know the reality of the situation they're in. Like in the situation of the ghost realtor, the strangest things can come up in the filming of Nathan For You.

Another fan favorite moment, when the gas station client talks about drinking his own grandson's urine, is something that some conspiratorial fans think isn't actually a real moment. Some believe it's scripted, but, truly, if things like this were scripted, they'd just come across as fake. It's precisely because it's so absurd that it's believable as the truth.

2/10 Fighting The Law

Obviously, people don't love to be tricked, and can respond in all sorts of ways to Nathan Fielder's antics in the course of filming the show. The things Nathan gets up to, as well, often toe the line of legality, and it apparently stresses out the legal team over at Comedy Central. Nathan Fielder isn't too worried about it, since he thinks they're on the line but have never crossed it, but that would be a problem for Comedy Central to deal with, anyways. And, besides, it's not funny when people get actually upset with him. Nathan knows comedy as well as he knows business, if not better.

1/10 The Nathan Character

Nathan Fielder is not actually like that, no. The character of "Nathan Fielder" that exists in Nathan For You has been constructed over a couple of decades by the real Nathan Fielder. It's important to have your "thing" as a comedian and, since the early '90s, Nathan's has been his awkward Nathan Fielder character. With the creation of Nathan For You, Nathan was finally able to utilize the character fully.
